We’ve all been dealing with COVID now for over 2 years. It’s made us pause to think about what is the safe thing to do to prevent getting it. We may not be doing things we typically do or, we do them less frequently. Wearing masks and avoiding indoor gatherings with people outside of your family or closest friends are highly recommended. Well, if you’re looking for an activity that is reminiscent of pre-COVID days I suggest to you Prescription: Ice Fishing.
Those who go ice fishing enjoy the fresh air, wide open space and exercise it provides. Wearing of masks, not really needed unless it helps keep your face warm. Social distancing, not really an issue as people and groups typically remain separated. Even if you do go with a larger group or join others you’ll enjoy the benefit of not being surrounded by 4 walls and a ceiling. It may not be listed on the official CDC list of things to do but, prescription ice fishing is a great way to enjoy yourself and feel like things are back to “normal”.
Ice fishing contests, jamborees, fisheeres, tournaments or whatever you want to call them are an outside activity the whole family can enjoy. Many of them have pre-drilled holes you can use and, they serve hot food and drink. Raffles are usually being run during their duration and prizes are given out for the fish that are caught. One of my favorites actually stocks a smaller lake with trout, offers $5,000 to the person who catches the “Old dodger” and has prizes for oldest and youngest fisherman and women. Porta-Potty’s are typically set up and a warming tent, building or sheltered pavilion are usually near-by. Besides fishing, kids can make snowmen and snow angels or bring along their ice skates and sleds for them to enjoy.
